New Subscription Site: TUMBLEBOOKS

Students at Spooner Elementary can now find good books to read through an online library called Tumblebooks.

See your teacher for log-in information during this trial period. Once you are logged in you see a screen like this one. Just scroll through the StoryBook titles and click one that you want to read. You can listen and read along, or pause the voice and read by yourself.

Book Awards

Yesterday was a BIG day for books and libraries with the announcement of annual Book Awards. Our school library owns the new Caldecott 2013 Award winning book: “This Is Not My Hat,” illustrated and written by Jon Klassen, published by Candlewick Press.

The Association for Library Service to Children media awards are announced every January at a Monday morning press conference that takes place during the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting.  ALSC website with award descriptions.

You need not be a member of Facebook, to see this page with individual announcements and photos:  ALA Youth Media Awards Facebook Page.

Hooray for books, authors and illustrators!

Late Start = Research

Today we have icy roads (and sidewalks), so school will start 2 hours late. I am looking at resources for 3rd graders who are doing biography reports of Famous, Inventive and Notable People.

The Smithsonian Museum has a search box giving you access to over seven million records including images. I put in the term 'Thomas Edison' and got old photographs, stamps and drawing of this famous inventor.

By clicking on the term 'EXPAND', and 'RECORD LINK'  I can see the details of the  Cataloging.

Here I can read that there are no restrictions on the use of this image, and send myself an email with the details.

Book Awards

Tomorrow the 75th Caldecott Book Award winners will be announced. National Public Radio has a great piece with some of the likely books to be chosen. Take a look at this link and click the books to see pages from each of the featured titles.

I like Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen, what do you like?

High 5 for Fairness

Our Fairness March for January's Core Value took place on Friday, January 18th.

Here are a couple of photos from that morning.  I especially enjoyed the 4th grade boys as they came by my spot in the library. There was a lull in the progress of the march, so they were giving one another 'High 5's for FAIRNESS' as you can see in this photo.

At the other end of the library there was a hallway with a group of girls holding their fairness signs that caught my eye.

Nice work kids!
